Glen Mar sends several teams on mission trips annually, some for adults only and some for youth with adult chaperons. In addition, Glen Mar members as individuals occasionally venture on trips with other organizations. Past trips have included destinations such as Hurley VA, Slidell LA, Philadelphia PA, Tahlequah OK (Cherokee Nation) and Eleuthera in The Bahamas.

Volunteers In Mission (VIM) Trips
VIM Trips are for adults and are sponsored by the United Methodist Volunteers in Mission (UMVIM). United Methodist Volunteers in Mission (UMVIM) provides everyday people with the opportunity to be short-term missionaries is one of the most heralded programs in The United Methodist Church. UMVIM volunteers go out in teams to do construction and spiritual formation projects for people and places in need. They are people of all different skill levels, serving as the hands and eyes of Christ. Glen Mar VIM teams make spring and summer trips annually.
VIM Spring Trip 2010
Last spring a team from Glen Mar went down to the Gulf Coast once again to work on hurricane recovery. They were hosted by The Texas Annual Conference's Partners in Mission organization, which works with the city of Galveston and the surrounding area. Housing was provided by churches on the island. Cost was $300. Click here to see more pictures from the 2009 trip.
Summer 2010 VIM Trip
The 2010 VIM summer trip was July 25 - Aug. 1. The trip was to Eleuthera in the Bahamas, where we worked with Shaun Ingraham of South Eleuthera Emergency Partners. This trip was open to youth (12-17 years old) with parents on the trip and youth 18+.
VIM Opportunities through the Baltimore Washington Conference
The United Methodist Baltimore Washington Conference puts together several trips that individuals and families can join. For more information on these trips, see the UMVIM Opportunities website.
Future VIM Destinations
Future Glen Mar VIM trips to India and Central America are in the works, in support of the work there by The United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR), the not-for-profit humanitarian agency of The United Methodist Church. UMCOR provides emergency response in times of natural or civil disaster, and is funded through one of The United Methodist Church's Special Sundays, the One Great Hour of Sharing as well as by Glen Mar's Extreme Fundraising. Find out more about UMCOR on the UMCOR website or visit the UMCOR facebook page.
Glen Mar Youth Trips
Glen Mar Youth trips are organized by the Glen Mar Youth Minister. Participants in the Glen Mar Youth trips are required to attend mandatory training sessions prior to the trips.
Summer 2010 Hurley, VA Trips (Appalachia)
There were two trips to Hurley, VA, in summer 2010: "Hurley Select" (June 5-11) and "Big Hurley" (June 27 - July 3). Both trips were hosted by Hurley Community Development, Inc. Hurley Select was a smaller group of graduating high school seniors, collegians and adults; Big Hurley was open to 8th grade and above. The cost of each Hurley trip wass $310 and included all housing, meals, materials and a T-shirt.
During trips to Hurley, participants stay in the gymnasium at Hurley High School, which we support via our extreme fundraising programs. We create long-lasting relationships while building porches, bathrooms, roofs and making many other improvements in this Appalachian community. Typically 20+ people participate in the Hurley Select trip and 100+ people participate in the Big Hurley trip.
Summer 2010 Jacksonville, FL Trip
Youth and adults participated in an "Urban Mission Experience" trip to Jacksonville, Florida, this summer from Jul. 18-24. This trip was sponsored by the Presbyterian Social Ministries. Cost was $250. 24 youth and adults participated.

YOAM (Youth On A Mission) Trips
Youth On A Mission (YOAM) is a community program started by a group of youth from Glen Mar in conjunction with youth from Bethany United Methodist Church, and other churches. They coordinate a mission trip to Slidell, LA each year during spring break. YOAM does its own occasional fundraisers, such as the YOAM Coffee Sales.
This year's trip was from April 4-10 and had 50 team members. Read about their experiences in this year's 2010 YOAM blog or last year's YOAM Newsletters, or check out their facebook site YOAM Slidell/NOLA trip 2010.
Announcements:
- YOAM Fundraising: YOAM is now forming teams of about 50 adults and youth who are voluntarily giving up their time off from school or work in January (January 2-8, 2011) and Holy week during spring break (April 17-23, 2011) to travel to Slidell, LA, to continue repairing the homes, hearts, and spirits of the community. To offset the costs, YOAM is asking for financial contributions as well as prayers. See the YOAM Winter Trip Fundraising Letter and YOAM Spring Trip Fundraising Letter for details on how you can help! God Bless, and thank you.
Participants: Please use these letters to send out to family and friends who may want to help support you on the trip! If you send out letters, please note that you need to send out a self-addressed envelope - addressed to you - so they can send any donation to you. Also note that checks should be made out to YOAM/ Glen Mar UMC. These checks should then be given to one of the adult leaders of YOAM so it can be used to support this mission.
- College YOAM Mission Trip - Winter 2011: The team will return to Slidell, LA on January 2 - 8, 2011 to continue Katrina rebuilding. For ages 18 & up. For more information or to put down your $50 nonrefundable deposit, contact Mark Hardin at mhardin@comcast.net.
- YOAM 2011 Spring Break Trip: Planning is also underway for next spring's trip, which will be Palm Sunday through holy week (April 17-23, 2011). Contact Mark Hardin at mhardin@comcast.net.
Financial Support
Glen Mar's gift card program, one of the Extreme Fundraising programs which generate "free" cash, supports mission trips in several ways.
- Individuals and families can designate that the money generated from gift card purchases be applied to their mission trip account. This year 34 individuals raised $4290.47 toward their mission trips in this way.
- A portion of the congregation's gift card purchases are set aside for general mission trip expenses and to make a donation to each mission trip's hosting organization. The donation amount is $25 for each person going on the trip, with a minimum of $250.
- There is a Mission Trip Scholarship Fund for both youth and adults for whom the cost of participating in a mission trip would be a hardship.
All mission trip participants are strongly urged to support various mission trip fundraisers. Participant fees do not cover the total costs of the trips, which include chaperon registration, vehicle rental and fuel. Solid fundraising effort is required to cover the approximately $15,000 in unbudgeted expenses.
Green Team : Youth participating in mission trips are encouraged to participate in work programs such as the Green Team, in which church members make a bid for yard work or odd jobs and the money paid goes directly to a youth's mission trip account. Most jobs take place on Saturdays (separate morning and afternoon jobs) with a few weekendnight evenings possible. The average job pays about $50 for a few hours work. If you are interested in working, please contact Rob Boyle at 410.750.8542 or by email at spacerob13@gmail.com.
